30 years in business and still thriving!
At the tender age of 20..ish, I wanted to work for myself, to be my own boss and be able to create my own designs. I thought what could be more fulfilling than to create and design garments that others would want to wear. I imagined days spent researching, drawing, and designing, knitting and sewing. I did not know where establishing Susan Fosse Knitwear in 1992 would take me. Not for one moment did I think that Susan Fosse would still be thriving after 30 years!
I believe it was my passion for design along with a certain level of naivety, of course, which pushed me to take a chance and start my own business. It is the idea of doing what I love everyday which fuelled and ultimately, lies behind the success of Susan Fosse 30 years on.
My mum has been such a great inspiration and unbelievable help through the years. Her eternal optimism and total belief in what we do has been invaluable. I too, have been lucky enough to have both my children working with me at different times. The daily encounters with the most amazing colleagues and fascinating customers have kept that excitement of new challenges alive.
The last couple of years have been a bit of a whirlwind. How we got through Covid, I don ́t know. That was a tough time. However, not only did we survive, we opened our new store, “Gløtt”, in 2021. What a journey that has been! We ́ve met wonderful creators and small business owners all working with what they love.
In the spring of 2022, we were offered new premises in Bryggen. We have loved our tiny cosy shop of almost 8 years. Were we ready to leave it? We had opened Gløtt less than a year ago. Could we take on the move? How would the world be after the pandemic?
The new shop is stunning! Not only does it have two windows, double doors, and hot and cold running water, it is enormous (compared to the old shop)! After a fabulous summer season, we said yes and opened the doors on the 3rd of December. And what an opening it was! We are now looking forward to seeing you all in this wonderful space. Come in for a chat, a nice cup of tea or just to say hi as you pass by. It ́s these little moments that make us able to continue doing what we love.
As another year draws to a close, I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of the Susan Fosse journey so far. I ́ve been lucky enough to work with inspirational people. I ́m honoured to call many of our fantastic customers friends and look forward to seeing where the next encounters take us.
Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a healthy and happy 2023.
Warmest regards Susan
Shopping at your sweet store and finding so many wonderful items ( scarves, 2 more sweaters for gifts, and an umbrella) which you shipped back to US, made my trip to Norway a highlight!
I was not sure I would get much use of my new Fosse wool sweater since our winter was so mild in 2024 BUT it has been a cold winter this year and it has been the perfect toasty addition. To think winter just started 3 weeks ago and your design plus cashmere scarf have been so appreciated already.. You were a delight to meet and always kept me informed about production re: one of the gift sweaters. I tell many friends who plan to travel to Bergen not to miss your shop.
Every time I bake a cinnamon bun I think of you and your store. I almost have the recipe perfected and similar to the great spot across from your store. I sat there looking at your windows then finding my way inside never expecting to come home with the very best reminders of a fantastic trip.
I always wanted a Norwegian wool sweater and you designs, prices, and ease of delivery all made that possible. Thank you!
